日本語で「い」を付けて形容詞になる色は「白、黒、青、赤、黄色、茶色」の六色だけでこのうち「色」無しで形容詞になる最初の４色だけが日本に古来からある色の概念らしい。中国由来の陰陽五行説でも東西南北にそれぞれ守護神がいて（蒼龍、朱雀、玄武、白虎）それぞれにその４色が割り当てられていた
